Lately, I have been getting a headache first thing in the morning. Most of the time, medicine doesn’t help me, so I set about to find out all I could about them and ways to make them GO AWAY!
Disclaimer: The items listed below are ways I personally have found relief. I make no claim to guarantee the effectiveness of these treatments. I am in no way claiming for any of these to work on migraines, as I do not suffer from them and have no knowledge. Always consult your doctor before trying any remedy. Read full disclosure here.
What is a headache?
That is a good question. They are brought on by many different factors and can last from a few minutes to an entire day. A headache is simply defined as pain in the head or neck. Basically, the blood vessels constrict and restrict blood flow. The causes can vary widely and so does the treatment. Everything from stress and tension to hunger and fatigue, having a headache is no fun.
Take a day off
Whether you are a blogger, movie buff, video game junkie, or social media addict; spending too much time staring at a screen can bring on a headache. So the solution here is simple, take a day off. Even just a long break can help here. Studies have shown that when we are looking at a screen, we blink less. This can cause our eyes to dry out and become tired. Tired eyes can lead to pain. You can try to focus on blinking more but honestly walking away for a bit is the easiest way to get relief.
Hunger can cause a major headache. This goes along with taking a break from the electronics. Being that I am a huge computer nerd, I love to write on my two blogs, watch YouTube, play World of Warcraft, and binge on Netflix. This means I can sit for hours without realizing the time. When I finally stand up, I first have to pee but then I realize that I am starving. Remembering to eat on a regular schedule is not only better for your health but can help prevent or fix a hunger headache. Also drink water often. Dehydration symptoms include headaches.
Get some rest
This is the only way to truly fix a “hangover” headache. Some people say “hair of the dog”, this is a really bad idea. These types of headaches have to run their course, water and rest is the best solution here. Taking a nap can also relieve a fatigue headache. Sometimes we are just too tired to realize it and that will bring on the pain. Just napping for 30 minutes can do your brain and body a world of good. Also wrapping up in a blanket warms you up and helps with blood flow.
Look to your garden
Ginger and Peppermint are natural headache remedies. You can simply cook with ginger more to help prevent a headache or you can use it as a treatment. Mixing lemon with warm water steeped with ginger root is one way to relieve the pain. You can even mix powdered ginger with water into a paste and apply directly to the forehead for quick relief. Peppermint oil contains menthol which helps regulate blood flow in the body. Quietly breathe in the aroma in a cool, dark room. You can also mix 3 drops of peppermint oil in one tablespoon of almond oil, or just add a little water and massage the temples or the back of your neck with it. Alternatively, you can apply crushed peppermint leaves on your forehead. Make an herbal tea by adding 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint to a cup of boiling water. Cover and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain and add some honey to sweeten it. Sip the tea slowly.
How many times have you said (or heard your partner say) “Not tonight, I have a headache”? This is actually one of the silliest things because having sex (I mean really good sex) can fix all kinds of problems. The orgasm is the key here. Causing the blood vessels to open up and the hormones released have pain blocking properties. While masturbation here can work too, actual sex has many other benefits that I recommend it above self-stimulation. Regularly having sex also reduces stress (there goes another headache) and reduces the risk of colds and flu (which can also cause headaches). This is my all in all winner for beating a headache and so many other things (and it is fun, so win-win).
