I have said in my about me page and even in my line of cookbooks, that I do not work out in any way. That is all about to change. Recent events have caused me to see that I need to be more physically active to promote better health. Today I take a simple pledge to be more active.

If your friend told you about a “magic pill” that could improve your health, would you be interested? A pill that will help you lose weight, strengthen your bones, prevent cancer and other diseases, improve your sexual pleasure, and improve your overall happiness, all for free, you would be interested right? Of course, you would. I can’t think of any person that wouldn’t jump on a pill like that. Well, I am here to tell you that pill exists. It is called physical activity.
No don’t go running for the hills (or maybe that is the kind of activity you like, then by all means), I am not saying to go out and join a gym or prep for a marathon. Just making simple changes can make a world of difference. I personally don’t like the word exercise, it just sounds like work. I prefer to say, walk your dog or sight-seeing in a park. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Even spending more time in your garden can help. To learn more about the benefits of a garden read here.
Keys to Sucess
Spending just 30 minutes a day doing something physical is really all it takes. I am sure you have heard this a million times and that is because it is true. Making a simple pledge to move more is the first step. My husband and I love to talk to each other. But with adult and teenage children around we find it hard. We have begun a new habit after dinner, we go for a walk. Most of the time we take the dogs, but we use this time to move and catch up on the day in privacy. This may sound like we are ignoring our children and that isn’t true. Life is about balance and taking those few minutes for just us is important.
We also make sure our children are getting some activity. Everything from them helping around the house and garden to having them help with the grocery shopping. We also include them in meal planning and preparation to teach them those lessons for when they are on their own. Little ones need less help being active but you can focus all that energy on useful things. Put a broom or rag in their little hands and watch the work they do. You may still have to go behind them and do it properly but they are learning that cleaning can be fun. Worry about the doing it “right” later.
Benefits of More Movement
The list here is very long, so I will just hit on a few of the best points. The benefits to your health include:
- Lowering your blood pressure
- A better night’s sleep
- Improved memory and alertness in general
- Stronger Bones
- Better posture
- Weight loss
- Immune system boost
- A longer life
- More energy
- Fight of depression
- Better sex
See I told you it was a lot.
Pledge to Start Today
If not now, when? I am always saying “tomorrow”. I will do that thing or work out or go for an extra walk tomorrow. This is a matter of life and death for me. I have seen my super thin and young daughter to heart specialists for high triglycerides at the age of 12. Who feeds there child that way? Pledge to start doing stretches during commercials of your favorite show. Pledge to walk your dog daily (or go for a walk if you don’t have a pup). Simple small changes each day and you will hardly even notice.
Now I am going to tell you why I started (please don’t laugh at me). At the end of October 2017, I lost my father. Now he didn’t pass because of his eating habits or even his lack of exercise. Cancer and heart failure took him from me. Why am I tell you this? Because it came up all of a sudden. He was fine and recovering from a minor surgery and then just went. So I had to fly home in a hurry. The options for my return flight after all was said and done were minimal. I had to make a short (20 minute) connection in Charlotte, NC. Needless to say, I was panicked about this because I had to return to work and couldn’t miss my flight.
The decision to run to my next gate was a bad one. That is where everything went wrong. I am overweight, let’s just get that out there. Running is not something I do EVER and I tripped over my own carry-on bag. I fell very fast and very hard. Not only was I humiliated but I was out of breath. After only running 30 feet or so by this point. I began to fight back tears of shame and embarrassment as people who were just on the plan with me saw what happened.

I made it to my gate by just walking fast the rest of the way and called my husband to tell him what happened. After asking if I was ok he said, “We have to do something”. He was 100% right. I started this whole lifestyle because the food we were eating was making him sick. I am not sure what made me think just eating better was enough but that all changes for me now. Join me?
Go out, buy yourself some new walking shoes (YAY shopping) and pledge to move more every day!
