On most of our trips to South Africa, Sedgefield is what we call “home base”. This is where my father-out-law lives so we spend a large portion of our time with him. I would like to share some of my favorite places with you below.
This is not too far from home base, just up the mountain near his home. A school for hang gliding, with one of the best views of the town. You can see the homes, ocean and the other mountains. There used to be a bed and breakfast on this mountain but now it is all privately owned land.
Swart Vlei (Black Lake)
This lake is called black lake because of the type of algae that grows at the bottom. Sedgefield’s most unique homes and vacation rentals surround this area. The water is unbelievably clear and calm.
Swart Vlei Beach
This is probably my favorite stop. A beautiful fishing and swimming spot practically across the street from where we stay. Tide pools are easy to find and you can spend a whole day finding shells and exploring the rock formations on your way to Gericke’s Point.
This rock formation gets its name because (you guessed it) it juts out from the rocks and looks like a lion. It is a bit of a walk to get to from the beach but you can see it for miles around. One of the most photographed landmarks in Sedgefield, you might even spot a shark or two.
There is so much to do and see in this quaint little town. The shops are amazing as well. Flea markets and classic car deals round out the adventures you can have here. It offers some great places to eat as well, you can read a bit more about the pizza place here. I hope you enjoy your time here and maybe I will see you at the beach. Cheers!
